Your photos should look like you.
Twenty years of photographing people at the biggest moments of their lives. The Miss USA and Miss America stages. Video for Randy Fenoli. Yes, that Randy Fenoli.
A face moves through a dozen emotions in one sentence. You'll miss eleven of them.
Your mother's face before she gets it back under control. The half-second where he stops performing and just looks at you. Those last about as long as a blink, and then they're gone for good.
I've spent twenty years on pageant stages. The moment happens once, the lighting is brutal, and nobody's going to redo the crowning because I wasn't ready.
A wedding's the same job. More hours, better light, nobody's wearing a sash.
I stay until you're done.
My job is to capture everything until you're done wanting things captured. Not until the timeline says so. Not until the hours run out.
And weddings aren't solemn. It's the one day your entire family is in one room and most of them are thrilled about it. Your uncle is going to do something weird at the reception. I'd like to be there for it.
Some things I won't do.
I won't edit you into someone else. AI has its place, but you already look like you, and that's who your kids want to find in these pictures in thirty years. I promise you’ll always look your best with a fixed fly-away here, or reducing a blemish on your maid-of-honor there. But you’ll always look like YOU.
I won't crush the color. Your dress is ivory. It stays ivory. Heavy grading is having a moment, and you're going to hang this in your hallway for three decades. Moments don't hold up that long.
I won't shoot you on train tracks. Trains still use those.
Most people think they're bad at being photographed.
You're not. You've just never been directed by somebody who does it for a living. I've spent twenty years pointing a camera at people on the most nervous day of their lives and getting them to look like themselves anyway. You'll be fine. That part's my job, not yours.
